Craft Beers from Lanzarote hit the UK & Ireland!

Cerveza Nao

We're delighted to be introducing Lanzarote's Craft Beers to the UK and Ireland.  To be fair, it was only a matter of time before we managed it!  Just like the Island's wines there's also a uniqueness to these beers, read on to find out more!

Cerveza Nao is the brainchild of Miguel Lasso, a local of the Island who in 2016 set up his state-of-the-art brewery and brew pub in a refurbished warehouse in the old fishing district of Arrecife.  After owning a successful marketing and advertising business in Madrid, he sold out and combined his passion of marketing with great beer, something he was familiar with having been a successful home brewer for many years.  He's now brewing up to 5,000 litres a month.

Since 2016 his project has gone from strength to strength, driven by the quality of his award-winning beers and his drive to put local craft beer into the mainstream in the Canary Islands.  Never scared to experiment and collaborate, the product range is evolving and ever changing.  In the past year Miguel has successfully collaborated with UK brewery Mondo Brewing, both here on Lanzarote and back in London.

As an Island in the middle of the Atlantic, nothing is straightforward in Lanzarote and that is the same inside the brewery.  The brewing water is filtered from the Atlantic Ocean, then a specific mineral recipe is added to the waters according to the style of beer. To give an additional Canarian twist, local (unmalted) grain is added alongside the malt in all of the beers which adds to the head characteristic.

The beers we have specifically chosen from Nao's selection of 8 Craft Beers was simply a seasonal choice, from fall leading into winter we decided to export these 3 wonderful different style beers…

Capitán American Pale Ale – 5.2%

This American Pale Ale is a clear golden, copper colour, using a variety of different malts including grain from the islands, then enriched with American and German hops delivering a light and refreshing beer with tropical aromas and just a moderate bitterness.

Mucho – Indian Pale Ale – 6.5%

This punchy IPA takes on a golden appearance, using 3 different malts and a then typically hopped packed recipe, hence its name Mucho (a lot).  It delivers a big malt foundation and also an explosion of hoppy aromas and bitterness to go with it.

Black Patrón – Black Indian Pale Ale 7.6%

Where to begin with this one!  Cleverly Miguel has blended two very different style beers and crafted up a competition finalist Black IPA.  On the one hand it's a dry and hoppy IPA style beer, but with a base of 4 caramel and roasted malts giving a very dark coffee appearance and a pleasant toasted aroma.

You can visit our Craft Beer Shop here.

We hope you enjoy the beers as much as us and our Craft Beer Tour clients.  If you are ever in Lanzarote, get in touch!

Best wishes

The Wine Shop Lanzarote Team.
