Bodega Las Cadenas: A New Chapter in Lanzarote Winemaking
Nestled in the heart of La Vegueta, Bodega Las Cadenas is one of Lanzarote's newest wineries, offering a fresh perspective on the island's centuries-old winemaking tradition. Although it has recently opened its doors, the winery's story is deeply connected to the volcanic vineyards that have influenced generations of local families.
Bodega Las Cadenas was founded by Francisco Rivera, who decided to take a new direction during the COVID-19 pandemic. After a successful career in construction, Francisco chose to retire and dedicate himself to his lifelong passion: wine. While this career change may seem bold, viticulture has always been a significant part of his life. Some of his earliest childhood memories were spent in the vineyards of Lanzarote, making this project a return to his roots rather than a new beginning.
Today, Francisco personally tends to a beautiful 20,000 m² vineyard located directly in front of the winery, where he cultivates Lanzarote's most iconic grape variety, Malvasía Volcánica. In addition, he owns four other vineyard plots across the island that reflect the diversity and uniqueness of Lanzarote's volcanic terroir.
While Francisco oversees the vineyards with dedication and passion, the wines themselves are made by Tomás Mesa, one of the most respected oenologists in the Canary Islands. Originally from Tenerife, Tomás has built an outstanding reputation through his work with renowned wineries, including El Grifo and Vega de Yuco, and his own personal project, Ruku Ruku. His experience and expertise contribute exceptional quality and precision to every bottle produced at Bodega Las Cadenas.
The winery's first vintage, released in 2024, consisted of approximately 5,000 bottles, making production intentionally small and focused on quality. The collection includes a crisp white wine made from 100% Malvasía Volcánica, showcasing the mineral character and freshness that have made Lanzarote wines famous, alongside an elegant rosé produced from the native Listán Negro grape.
As one of the newest wineries on the island, Bodega Las Cadenas combines modern ambition with a respect for tradition. It exemplifies how Lanzarote's winemaking heritage continues to evolve while remaining firmly connected to its volcanic landscape and family traditions.
